These days it’s tough to get through your day without feeling overwhelmed at times. And, those of you who are caregivers to children or to our Elders are doubly busy, in addition to trying to care for yourself. Sometimes that last part gets shoved aside in favour of ensuring those around you are looked after first. So, if it’s time to recharge, you may want to consider this list of easy ways to pamper yourself. Whether you work outside of the home or are a stay-at-home parent or grandparent, you need a little downtime to take care of yourself in order to continue taking care of others. And, what you choose to do doesn’t have to be expensive, or even require that you step out of the house! Here are some inexpensive and simple ways in which you can practice positive self care:
Read a Good Book
Many of you may already own a Kindle or have downloaded materials to read via apps. If you haven’t yet got into the experience of reading online, and you’ve worked through your already extensive collection of books, not to worry. You can still e-read without making a single purchase, using your laptop, tablet, or desktop. And, you can still order books for shipping to your home! The Six Nations Public Library has online access to a wide variety of resources, both educational and simply for pleasure, all easily accessible at the link provided here. In addition, Ebookfriendly.com has compiled a list called “10 Sites Where You Can Read Books Online,” making it easy for those without special tools or know-how to access great material for their free reading pleasure. Likewise, Goodminds.com features First Nation, Metis, Inuit, and Native American literature, vetted as being both culturally appropriate and authentic in terms of educational resources. Not only that, but this business is located on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory! If you can’t get out to a library or store, you can easily search their material list and place an order online for shipping direct to your door. Reading on your own is an excellent way to take some time to yourself and practice positive self care
Turn on Your Radio
Listening to your favourite music has been shown to reduce stress, producing a tremendous difference in your relaxation levels. Hearing our own interests in music is uniquely linked to our emotions and can benefit your spirit and body in a number of positive ways, making for excellent self care. If you haven’t tried streaming a playlist of tunes you like best via Spotify or Apple Music, you may want to listen to the live streaming available through CKRZ FM and Jukasa Radio! Both stations are locally owned and operated and provide a variety of genres and programs through which to hear great sounds – from a cultural perspective through contemporary sounds. Playing the hits that will keep you singing, dancing, or simply tapping your toes, these stations are a great way to catch up on the latest music, hear the classics, or just get you into a good groove when you need it most!
Go for a Walk
Taking an easy stroll in the woods, countryside, or along a groomed trail is easier to do than one might think. Throughout the community of Six Nations, you can incorporate walking time in the great outdoors on the Nature Trail located off the parking lot at the Six Nations Tourism Building. Here you can identify native plant species found in the Carolinian ecosystem which are detailed along the path. And, those looking to simply stroll through the community on a steadier surface can do so along our sidewalks in and around the village itself. Going for a walk has been proven to be a great self care option in terms of stress reduction, and our community has ample opportunities to make that happen!
