About the ‘On the Water’ Package: Begin your day by arriving at Chiefswood Park located along the banks of the Grand River. You will meet your canoe guide and start off by discussing the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address which will provide understanding around our belief system. Next the guide will go through the safety and basic paddling lessons. Everyone will get fitted for their personal floatation devices (PFDs) and paddles. Now it is launch time! Your guide will assist you with getting into the canoe or kayak correctly and safely.

The paddle will start by going upstream. The guide will lead the group up then pull off to the side of the river and direct everyone to follow along. At the side of the river your guide will provide Haudenosaunee history and culture. The first stop will discuss our creation story and our beliefs around that.

The rest of the stops along the river will discuss the history of the Six Nations regarding our traditional lands and how we came to live in this area, the way Six Nations was when the people came to this area, the life and transportation system of the water ways, stories of adaption and survival, and family life. While on the Grand River you will be able to enjoy the Carolinian Forest that surrounds the river and the wildlife in and around the river.
